I’m not particularly sure how to start this post, or even if such a post is allowed in this type of community, but I thought I’d give it a shot because I think it’s important.
I’ve never really cared for kids, and I certainly never thought I’d be a parent (both being gay and not liking children), but as I’ve become older, the notion of having a kid has grown on me. I guess time will tell. I have a good relationship with both of my parents, so I like to think they did a pretty good job.
Anyway, as I’m cross-posting this to a variety of parenting communities, the major content is behind an lj-cut for your convenience. Still, I’d appreciate your help.
I am the founder and maintainer of gsa_lj, and I’ve been thrilled with the success I’ve seen the community become. But as I’m always looking to improve quality, I’ve decided to try and recruit teachers and parents, a highly under-represented segment of the community membership.
Speaking from my own experiences, and those of community members who have shared theirs, I know how difficult some people have with coming to grips with their sexual orientation (or gender identity). A lot of teenagers and young adults go through serious angst before, during, and after coming out to their parents. Parents, meanwhile, are oblivious and dismiss those serious feelings of their children, which aren’t going to change, as a phase which will be grown out of, a choice (it isn’t), or go into denial. It only hurts the self-esteem of and your relationship with your kid.
But I’m not here to preach. My point is, I think the community could benefit from gaining the insight of more parents. And I think the parents open to joining could benefit from learning what it’s like to be young and a sexual minority. Parenting is difficult, and parenting a gay son or daughter presents unique challenges.
I’d appreciate your help, if you’re willing. I have a feeling many of you would take away from being a member, and your future (or current) children may benefit from your open mind. If you have any questions, please let me know. And again, I apologize if this sort of post isn’t allowed, although I do believe it fits within the scope of this community.
